Shoulder injuries

What's wrong with my shoulder?

What does a shoulder injury involve, let’s do a search on the internet shall we? Let’s see:

rotator cuff tear

shoulder impingement

arthritis

frature

tendinitis

tears

labral injuries

bursitis

instability

Frozen shoulder

dislocated shoulder

Acromioclavicular joint tears

Wow that’s a fair bit that can go wrong with a shoulder and yes, a lot of diagnoses to consider. So after your internet search, do you have the answers you needed? probably not, the reason being partly is that the shoulder is not a straight forward part of our body. Far from it, just ask Andrew our Director/physiotherapist. He spends quite a lot of time working with people who have shoulder injuries. A bit of an area of special interest for Andrew he has spent a large portion of his professional practice working with shoulder conditions. The most unstable joint in the body in part due to the fact it has the greatest range of motion it can abduct, adduct, flex, extend and rotate. It has the scapulohumeral joint, the glenohumeral joint, the scapolothoracic junction, the ribcage which it articulates off, the acromioclavicular joint, and multiple muscle and facial connections between the neck, thoracic spine and ribcage.

How is it that a physio can treat all these conditions and such a complex joint? quite simply put, we’re trained to. Andrew in particular has always been interested in the mechanics of the shoulder and how by changing something in the kinetic chain he can affect movement, control and symptoms.

How do you know that you need a physio? there are a couple of things to consider, is your shoulder getting better? how long have you been suffering from shoulder pain and dysfunction? are you getting what you need out of your shoulder to live the life you want to? So when it comes to seeing a physio be prepared to consider all these factors. Generally the longer a condition has been occurring, the more complex it can be to manage. As such, early intervention is always preferable for an optimal recovery.
