Injury prevention…who has the time?

Andy speaking at a gym regarding injury prevention

What’s that saying? prevention is better than cure. This saying has meaning if you’re a planner, someone who is proactive rather than reactive to situations. Unfortunately, the current climate is one of poor time. Time is something we chase, can’t be quantified in a monetary sense, and you can’t substitute it for something else. And, you’ll never get time back, so no wonder we all guard our time so much.

When it comes to injury prevention, why do we bother? can’t we just manage things as they happen? well yes and we generally do regardless, however, what if you could do one thing that would reduce your likelihood of injury? Would you do it? Don’t answer that.

I recently ran a seminar at a dance studio regarding injury prevention and sports participation. This is something I enjoy doing immensely as it gets me out of the clinic, and I have to say a dance studio has an energy that anyone can feel. It’s also refreshing to see athletes in their environment, and challenges my skill set.

Some of the topics I covered were guidelines for aerobic exercise, the importance of sleep, common niggles and injuries DOMs, and dance specific injuries/conditions, nutrition and diet, and lifestyle factors that impact on injury recovery.

What did I learn from this experience? heaps, but first:

  1. public speaking is something I actually like and excel at

  2. thinking on your feet helps you to grow as a professional

  3. everyone always has a question they want to ask, if this wasn’t the case, health related queries on google wouldn’t be so popular

  4. give people the opportunity to thrive

There is a place for injury prevention in every setting and I feel that if it is marketed as well-being or performance enhancement, we may find as health professionals that patients are more willing to engage in the conversation of preventative health and will make the time.
